Over the weekend of July 8th, 9th and 10th, 16 of us came together under the them of “Giraffes Just Wanna Play!”

The intention of the weekend was to spend time together, connect, share Training ideas, games and discuss what was important to us.

Friday night saw us gathering for super yummy soup made by Susie and Deb followed by a deep connection circle run by Wayne. We all stood around in a circle and the water, the earth, air and fire surrounded us. We connected, shared where we where at and also were honoured by Angus’ song that he had written for us over the weekend called “Stand Strong”.

Saturday morning, a few of us gathered at 6am to Meditate, followed by Susie leading Yoga. Susie opened the morning by taking us on a walk around the grounds of Sharda. We were asked to walk in Silence. Anna welcomes in the Ancestors and we got to spend time with Halima (the woman who’s vision created Sharda) where here ashes lay.

Over the day we explored offerings of “Design an NVC Workshop”, Parenting, Games with Anna, Games with Wayne & Discussion in regards to how we’d like to engage with the NVC Aotearoa NZ Trust.

Also for the first time in 18 Months, the NVC Aotearoa NZ Trust board met face to face. We celebrated our reconnection and and mourned how challenging it has been to connect via technology.

Dinner was a feast – thanks to Wulf, Scott, Miro and everyone else who contributed. Yummy. We even had a special guest appearance from Akasadaka. Gratitude to Paxe who sang a song to bless the food and the cooks.

After Dinner Deb lead a sharing of our celebrations and our mournings. The Dame Edna Mega Glasses (provided by Susie), and a hat (provided by Anna and worn by Marshall Rosenberg) were handed around.

Later on that night, Odelia led us in Universal Dances of Peace followed by vegetable juggling by Wayne and Karl in the kitchen. Some kind of “juggle off” while we all clapped, cheered and dodged flying veggies. Even a cabbage and cans were part of the extravaganza.

A few of us met again to meditate on Sunday morning, followed by Yoga with Susie. Anna lead us in the opening, asking us to connect with cards. We then had a full group session on Marketing lead by Anna. We played Psycic Giraffes with Wayne, learn about the Infinity Dance Floor with Miro and Jocelyn, and then went into a closing circle where we got to share in pairs our mournings and celebrations, our acknowledgements of each other, to acknowledge our ancestors and also to hear and share in Angus’ song again ( fitting way to end as we started).

We ate lunch together prepared by Phil and Meagan, some of us left to travel home and the others of us got together to share our hopes for the next gathering and completing with a crazy progressive story. We then pitched in to clean Sharda and parted ways (for now).

Compassionate Communication

Foundation training with Susie Spiller.

Supported by Deb Hipperson

This is an eight week foundation training in Nonviolent Communication (NVC).

Most of us have been educated from birth to compete, judge, attack and defend; to think and communicate in terms of what is “right” and “wrong” with ourselves, others and the world around us. The pain and dissatisfaction that flows from this consciousness I find comforting to know can be transformed.

The course will help us reach beneath the surface, and realise how all of our actions are based on human needs that we are seeking to meet. We learn to develop a vocabulary of feelings and needs that helps us to express clearly what is going on in us at any given moment. When we understand and acknowledge our needs, we develop a shared foundation for much more satisfying relationships.

“Judgments, criticism and violence are all tragic expressions of unmet needs.”

Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, Founder of the Centre for Nonviolent Communication

10 May—28 June 2011 Tuesdays, 12.30pm to 2.30pm (8 classes) Ranui Community Centre 474 Swanson Rd, Ranui Enrolment fee: $10

To Register contact: Susie Spiller – Phone: 09 529 7558 – Mobile: 021 770 107 Email: susie@susiespiller.com	www.susiespiller.com

In our busy lives & our Geographical Spread, it is often challenging to give and receive empathy when there is some kind of travel involved to get to a place to connect face to face.

the EMPATHY couch was dreamed up when we were at Discovery (www.discoveryforteens.co.nz) a few years ago, thinking how wonderful it could be to have a room with an extremely comfy couch where people could just come, sit and give and receive empathy. From then on, the idea has been evolving. Unfortunately we live in a very small place where the EMPATHY couch just wouldn’t fit – so until we find somewhere bigger, our EMPATHY couch is invisable to the naked eye, but not to the spirit in need of being heard. For now we are offering a skype & phone community service – (Koha based) – initially raising money for the couch, covering the internet/phone charges & then funding it going on the road.

We feel pretty excited about this prospect – imagining in the future turning up in a park somewhere – setting it up, the side table lamp, the rug, the box of tissues, perhaps tea and coffee … and just giving Empathy. The perhaps the couch will get a life of it’s own, “hey… can I borrow the couch this weekend …? ” Perhaps instead of Tony Hawkes hitchiking around Ireland with a Fridge – the EMPATHY couch might be spotted hitching around New Zealand! (or perhaps on it’s own trailer!)

Our first South Island Gig! … hurrah!

We were warmly welcomed into the Rudolf Steiner School in Motueka to run a Foundation Workshop, supported by Scott, Paxe, Konstanca & Manny. There is something quite wonderful about running an NVC Workshop in a school – especially one that is so lovingly tended & attended by the community. We were both touched and warmed by the people who came along this weekend & look forward to our next visit.

A huge thank you to Wulf who put us up at his place – a lovely cosy house up on the hill (with the most amazing views)- where we chatted late into the night before and during the workshop, eating olives & cheese. Can’t say much sleep was had that weekend! After the workshop, Manny drove us back to Blenheim for a night of rest before returning to Auckland on Monday morning.

On the weekend of 24th & 25th July, we went to Whanganui to run a Foundation Training. With gratitude to Clare & Nityajyoti for organising this for us!

We ran a Free Introduction on Friday night & were thrilled with the attendance of 10 people.

The weekend ran beautifully and was supported graciously by Tess, Aladdin and Nityajyoti. We were warmed and grateful for the incredible venues we had – firstly the Friends of the Quakers Meeting house (Saturday) and the St. Joesephite Retreat Centre (Sunday).

We so enjoyed meeting the people who came along over the weekend, sharing the delicious meals and learning, growing and playing together. It was lovely to be so welcomed into the community and to be warmed from the inside out.
